Workshop to introduce HDPE digester

Within co-research framework between the SubProM project and the Vietnamese Biogas Association (VBA), we designed a new digester which manufacture by HDPE layer. On November 09th 2014, a workshop was organized to introduce this HDPE digester at household of Mr. Bui The Trung, My Thuan hamlet, My Khanh ward, Phong Dien district, Can Tho city.

This HDPE digester was introduced to offers more opportunities to husbandry farmers in the Mekong Delta. Using HDPE layer with 0.75 mm thickness, the new digester has similar shape to the PE digester. This HDPE digester making at the workshop and transport to farmer households so that it is easier and quickly to install on various surface of land (normal soil, pond, canal, etc.). The treatment efficient of this HDPE digester is similar to other popular digesters in the Mekong Delta. Other strong points of this digester are confront to physical conditions such as sunshine or outside effects. The thickness HDPE layer keep protect for the digester body so that farmer do not need to cover the bottom of the trench (to avoid the plant roof) or cover the digester body (to avoid the direct sunshine). The black colour of HDPE layer absorb sunshine into digester which keep warm for the inside substrate, the anaerobic micro-organism has good condition to growing and digest organic matter more quickly. In additional, this digester will be install without the separated gas storage bag so that saving investment cost and create high pressure (testing of pressure at the factory got 90 cm of water head) which good enough for cooking or lighting.

The testing HDPE digester installed at the household where we organised the workshop already operate in 70 days in good condition. This digester was fed with joint materials of 50% pig manure and 50% rice straw. The thickness of HDPE make easier for the feeding job, especially in case of biomass materials.
