Attending the “23rd European Biomass Conference and Exhibition”

From 1 to 4/6/2015 at the Messe Wien Congress and Exhibition Center, Austria was organized the “European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE)”. This is the annually 23rd conference which continuously to the successful of previous conferences. In this conference, there are some of biomass-related topics were mentioned and discussed such as biomass resources; biomass conversion technlogy for heating, cooling and electricity; biomass conversion technologies for liquid and gaseous fuels, chemicals and materials; biomass policies, markets and sustainability; bioenergy in integrated energy systems…

With 803 presentations by over 2,500 authors and co-authors, this year, the 23rd European Biomass Conference and Exhibition has marked the record number of 76 participating countries. In total, 1,394 participants attended the EUBCE in which an impressive 30% increase in the number of participants from Asian countries. “The European Biomass Conference and Exhibition confirms its global importance to bring the scientific and the industrial community together; permanent R&D activities, together with a stable regulatory framework supporting the market penetration of new technologies are two fundamental elements for all marketplayers,” said Ingwald Obernberger, Conference General Chairman, during the Conference Political Opening.

Attending to this conference, Dr. Nguyen Vo Chau Ngan - PostDoctoral from SubProM project - representative of research team had visual presentation on title “Apply paddy straw for energy production to reduce in situ straw burning in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam”. In this study, the lab scale 20 L anaerobic digesters were applied to co-ferment paddy straw and pig manure in 60 continuous days, each treatment had 5 replicates. Straw was cut in different sizes of 1.0 cm, 10.0 cm, 20.0 cm, original size and co-digested with pig manure by mixing ratio of 50%:50% (based on their organic dry matter values). Before co-fermented, straw was pre-treated with effluent from an operating anaerobic digester in 5 days. The recorded values of temperature (25,3 to 30,30C), pH (6,74 ± 0,18), and redox potential (-316,4 to -128,2 mV) of almost treatments were suitable for activities of methanogenic micro-organisms. The biogas yield of treatment with straw size of 1.0 cm was 691.05 L/kg ODMfermented, of 10.0 cm - 687.79 L/kg ODMfermented, of 20.0 cm - 685.08 L/kg ODMfermented and original size - 680.44 L/kg ODMfermented which significant different to the control treatment of 100% pig manure was 436,95 L/kg ODMfermented (p<0.05). The CH4 content tended to increase in time from 50.7 to 62.65% since the 2nd week that good enough for cooking purpose. The results confirmed paddy straw could apply as additional material besides the pig manure at farmer household biogas plant to produce biogas for decentralization energy using purposes. The sustable size of paddy straw to adding to biogas plant could be 10 to 20 cm length.
