The demand for biofuels is forecasted to increase steeply during the next decades. Current production of 1st generation biofuels almost exclusively depends on sugars derived from important food crops. However, large-scale biolfuel production from high value (and limiting) food crops is not a sustainable nor ethically viable practice in a world with a rapidly increasing population and is likely to subside soon.
